Chandrakirti Meditation Centre is situated in the rural farming community of Upper Moutere, 35 minutes west of Nelson City. The 5 acre park like grounds house 2 dwellings, a meditation hall, a longlife Stupa, a pagoda, a tipi as well as some old sheds. The Co Directors Bruce Farley and Phillipa Rutherford live in the main house and run their commercial cleaning business, Sunrise Cleaning Services (Nelson) Ltd from this home office. The Teachers House up the hill is occupied by our resident facilitator Alan Carter and Ven Jampa Youdon lives in the main house. Chandrakirti Meditation Centre is home to between 4-6 people at any time.
We welcome volunteers and WOOFERS to stay at Chandrakirti Meditation Centre for designated periods of time to live, work and study with us. The volunteer programme offers people a unique opportunity to live in a Buddhist Meditation Centre and work, providing services in exchange for accommodation, food and study classes. Live in volunteers and WOOFERS work for 5 hours per day 6 days a week in exchange for free accommodation, free food and free study classes. Generally volunteers indicate the period of time they wish to stay at the Centre and what skills they have and would like to contribute.

A Chandrakirti Centre staff member will show you what to do and provide guidance and necessary materials. Hours of work are 5 hours per day for 6 days or 6 hours per day for 5 days, from approx 9am to 4pm or 10am to 5pm.

As Chandrakirti Centre is just developing, accommodation for volunteers is in caravans located in the garden. All have mains power and heaters and are quite comfortable.
